Aruna and others face tough table tennis battle
The Nigerian Quadri Aruna has been given a familiar opponent in Romania's Eduard Ionescu in his opening match in the men's singles of the Paris 2024 Olympic table tennis tournament, but he is on a collision course with world number one Wang Wang Chuqin in the round of 32, PUNCH Sport Extra defeated.
The 35-year-old player has a bye in the first round and will start in the round of 16 against Ionescu.
His compatriot Olajide Omotayo has a tough match against Iran's Noshad Alamiyan in the first round of the men's singles table tennis competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The draw took place on Wednesday 23 July at the South Paris Arena and was attended by coaches and team managers. It also presented a major challenge for Africa's flag-bearers Egypt in the team and mixed doubles tournaments.
Like Omotayo, Offiong Edem will face Brazil's Bruna Takahashi, while debutant Fatimo Bello faces a daunting task against Chinese-born French star Jia Nana Yuan in the first round of the women's singles.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will be a major event for table tennis: it will be the tenth time that table tennis has been an Olympic sport since its debut in Seoul in 1988 in South Korea.
The head-to-head match between Aruna and Romanian shows that both players have met once, and that was during the semi-final of the European Champions League, where the Romanian defeated Aruna 3-2. Paris 2024 will be their second meeting in a competition.
Like Aruna, Omotayo will be up against a left-handed Iranian whose style often confuses opponents and who has also defeated some of the world’s best players with his clumsy style of play. Omotayo will need to be at his best if he hopes to win his first match at the Olympics.
