NC State football has a lot of work to do before its game against Tennessee
RALEIGH KC Concepcion says NC State's football coaches had a message for the Wolf pack in the locker room on Thursday evening.
“We still have a lot of work to do. Obviously we expected a blowout, but not every game is going to be a blowout,” Concepcion said after a 38-21 win over FCS opponent Western Carolina.
The Wolfpack were 33-point favorites according to bookmakers and trailed early in the fourth quarter before rallied with a 21-point streak led by Concepcion and running back Jordan Waters.
NC STATE NUMBERS VS WESTERN CAROLINA
Concepcion finished with three touchdowns and Waters reached the end zone twice in the fourth quarter, helping NC State avoid an opening night disaster at Carter-Finley Stadium.
But, as Concepcion said, the Wolfpack (1-0) still has some work to do. If NC State plays No. 15 Tennessee like it did against the Catamounts, it could be a long night on Sept. 7 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
In the first half, NC State missed the opportunity to grab two interceptions on the first two plays of the game and saw linebacker Caden Fordham get ejected on the same drive. Offensively, the Wolfpack had an interception, nearly lost two fumbles and ended the half with consecutive drives that resulted in a turnover on downs.
We just started slow, just first-game nerves, defensive lineman Davin Vann said. I think there was just first-game nerves. I think going forward, we've got to attack every quarter with a fourth-quarter mentality.
Nerves and frustration were the buzzwords for the Wolfpack, but head coach Dave Doeren was pleased with his players' response in the second half. He said the Wolfpack learned a lot as the game went on and that we grew.
I also think our guys have woken up a little bit and just started playing better, Doeren said.
Statistically, quarterback Grayson McCall was solid in his debut with 318 yards and three touchdowns. Still, McCall, like Concepcion, knows the Wolfpack will have to play their best against the Vols at the Dukes Mayo Classic.
“I don't think I played my best game, I don't think we played our best game,” McCall said. “But I'm happy we came away with the win. There's still a lot to improve on with a chance to grow and get better next week.”
