Team USA athlete from Nacogdoches shares passion for table tennis during upcoming workshop
TYLER, Texas (KETK) — A Nacogdoches teen has made a name for himself as a world-renowned table tennis player, traveling to competitions around the world and collecting tournament medals with his paddle. Now Cole Rothenberger is back in East Texas and wants to give back to the community where it all started by hosting a workshop at the Nacogdoches Table Tennis Club.
Rothenberger is 18 years old and already a Team USA athlete. He picked up the table tennis bat for the first time four years ago after a rainy outdoor tennis season at the CL Simon Rec Center. Since then he has competed all over the world and most recently ranked 8th worldwide in his class.

“After my first [international competition]About two weeks later I was offered as a table tennis newcomer to the Paris Sports and went to a high performance training camp in Glasgow, Slovenia. said Rothenberger. “In just two weeks I made so much progress and I noticed that I had very good potential to play at international level.”

Born with arthrogryposis, a condition that limits movement in his feet and ankles, Rothenberger has worked hard to overcome the challenges that come with the disability, stay active and also become an accomplished para-athlete.
After the training camp in Slovenia, Rothenberger’s career as a top table tennis player skyrocketed. Now he splits his time between training in Slovakia, where he plays in a club league, and his U.S. Para Residency Program at UNC Charlotte when he’s not traveling.

Thought he was back in town for a few days, Rothenberger focused on achieving his next goal: qualifying for the 2026 World Championships in October. After that, his eyes are on the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
“Obviously, I love playing the sport,” Rothenberger said, explaining his motivations. “Traveling the world, meeting a lot of new people, a lot of friends. It’s just a great sport.”
Throughout his athletic career, Rothenberger has developed a “never give up” approach to any challenges he faces. He tells young athletes who want to reach a level of play like Rothenberger’s, or simply improve, to stay focused.
“Train hard and try not to let loss affect you,” advises Rothenberger.

While he’s back, Rothenberger wants to give back to the East Texas table tennis community at the recreation center where he first learned.
On May 28 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, Rothenberger will host his own table tennis workshop for players of all levels at the CL Simon Rec Center. There is a $2 entrance fee to the recreation center, but otherwise it is a free event to learn from Rothenberger’s paddling skills.
“I’m very excited to bring back some of the things I learned during training abroad and help some players enjoy playing,” said Rothenberger.
