! Spanish News Today – A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook communities in the Canary Islands on Friday morning

The earthquake was felt in several towns across Gran Canaria after it struck the Atlantic Ocean. A fairly strong earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale was recorded off the coast of Gran Canaria on Friday morning, May 22, and was felt in several parts of the Canary Islands.

The quake occurred at 9.50 a.m. Canary Islands time in the Atlantic Ocean about 61 kilometers north of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, according to Spain’s National Geographic Institute.

The quake occurred about 30 kilometers below the sea floor, and although there were no reports of damage or injuries, many residents reported feeling shaking.

The cities where the earthquake was observed included Agate, Galdar, Ingenio, Aguemés and San Mateo, along with many other areas across Gran Canaria.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake is considered a moderate earthquake and is certainly strong enough to be widely felt, especially when it occurs relatively close to populated areas. Earthquakes of this size can sometimes shake buildings, shake windows and briefly alarm residents, although they do not usually cause serious structural damage.

The earthquake was also followed by a series of smaller earthquakes in the same area.

Earlier in the morning, around 9.15am, another smaller earthquake with a magnitude of 2.1 was recorded between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, although this one was much weaker.

Then at 10.24am, another magnitude 2.2 earthquake struck northern Gran Canaria, followed shortly thereafter by another magnitude 3.4 earthquake at 10.43am.

None of those subsequent earthquakes were reportedly felt by the public.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, but there was no tsunami warning or indication of any major danger following Friday’s activity.
