Incoming Terps football legacy Jianni Davis: “It was a bloodline.”
During the recruitment of Jianni Davis, the local factor was hardly the only attractive thing about Maryland. The incoming Terps edge, as you probably know by now, is also the son of the legendary former Maryland and NFL tight end Vernon Davis.
“It’s more than just staying here, just going to Maryland. I mean, it’s bigger than that. My dad, like you said, went there. Me and my family, it was a bloodline, it was a legacy there,” Davis told George Gerbo of the Washington Times on the District of Sports podcast. “So I went there on my official visit and I thought, ‘You know what? I love the atmosphere, I love the energy on this campus, so why not just come here and continue building that legacy?'”
The Bishop McNamara (Md.) product will have many top mentors in Maryland, where he will join last year’s all-American freshman duo of Sidney Stewart and Zahir Mathisalong with a five-star fellow incoming recruit Zion Elee.
What does he want to learn from them?
“Probably just deepened my bag and got more moves. I know Sidney, I watched him a few times, he had really nice pass-rush moves and stuff. So I would definitely take some of that from him,” he said.
“I met Sidney when I came on an official visit. He’s a pretty cool guy. Zion, we worked out a few times and went out to dinner a few times. Those are my guys, so I definitely had a chance to talk to them and get to know them a little bit.”

On whether it will be difficult to switch from tight end to defensive end: “Not at all. I’ve played those two positions all my life, so it wasn’t that big of a switch because I always played both sides since I started playing football. I just had to choose one, so I chose defense.”
On what stands out about him: “Really, my elusiveness. I feel like I’m a very nervous guy, so I feel like I can really bring that out when it comes to that edge room. My nervousness, my speed. I’m looking forward to really using that and showing everyone what I can do.”
On dropping back in coverage: “I’d like to add that to that. Interceptions, I had three this year. I’d like to go back, drop back in coverage. That would be nice.”
On recruiting advice from his father: “Honestly, my dad just let me figure it all out as I went, get my own experience and learn and understand things on my own. But certainly sometimes he would tell me, ‘Yes, I’ve been through this and that.’ So definitely the moments where he told me things like that.’
About Malik Washintgon: “Malik, that’s my husband. I also met him during my official visit, so he’s a nice guy to be around, good energy. I never caught him, never saw him or anything like that. He’s always a happy guy. So yeah, I love Malik, that’s my husband.”
On whether Maryland could win big if they kept the locals at home: “Yes, 100%. The DMV has a lot of hidden gems, has a lot of stars, and I think if everyone from the DMV area would just go to the University of Maryland, I think we could definitely do something great… Absolutely, especially with all these recruits we got this year. I definitely see us going to the Big Ten Championship.”
On his plans before enrolling: “Yeah, I’ve been really grinding since the end of the season, so I’ll keep doing that, but maybe I’ll take a little side trip before I go… I love the beach, I just love sitting there, just relaxing, sitting outside.”
