Prince William’s modest boarding school where he lived a normal life amid his parents’ divorce

If we think back to 1990, Prince William attended Ludgrove School, where he received a very normal education, far from the spotlight of his then parents: Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

The royals announced their separation in 1992, the same year William’s younger brother Prince Harry joined him at the school, before finalizing their divorce in 1996. Both brothers left at the age of 13 to attend Eton College, which was known for its 25-metre swimming pool with a movable bottom, a 2-kilometre-long rowing lake and other luxury facilities.

Although Ludgrove was located on 200 hectares of woodland and tennis courts, it still seemed more modest, judging from excavated photographs taken in 1989, the year before William’s enrollment. The preparatory school, located in Wokingham, Berkshire, featured communal bedrooms with cream walls, red carpets and green curtains.

Wood framed single beds were equidistant from each other, with matching side tables and chairs completing the furniture. Each room was personalized with family photos or posters, so students could make the room their own.

Although no photos of William’s personal room were ever released to protect his privacy, it was reported that he too shared a room with five other students.

In addition to the personal quarters, William, Harry and other students could also spend their free time in the games room, which had a table tennis table and a piano.

Meals were served in the dining room, where walls were lined with notable alumni and tables were covered with yellow tablecloths, or in the conservatory-style dining room overlooking the grounds.

Navigating a royal childhood

While William and Harry’s father, Charles, made headlines for being the heir to the British throne who was getting divorced, the school’s director, Gerald Barber, reportedly went out of his way to protect the young royals from the press’s interference.

Their mission was largely accomplished, Prince Harry suggested in his autobiography Spare. Despite claiming that “over a hundred boys lived in the area”, leading to very little privacy, he added that he was given space after his mother’s death in August 1997.

‘And yet I don’t think so much that one boy mentioned my mother when that new school year started. Out of respect? More likely out of fear. At least I didn’t say anything to anyone,” he recalled.

Apart from the headmasters, who Harry described as “legends”, the matrons were also a source of comfort to the royals. He talked about the support he received from them in Spare and wrote: Whatever tenderness we received, every day, came from the “Mums-Away-From-Mums”.

“The matrons hugged us, kissed us, bandaged our wounds and wiped our tears,” he wrote, before explaining that they were the ones who encouraged him to write a final letter to his late mother to help with closure.

After finding letter writing difficult while navigating “their messy breakup”, he said it became “impossible” to take part in the mandatory activity after losing his mother.
