Table tennis referee Foote was promoted to the world elite

A British table tennis referee is one of only 25 people in the world to have reached the sport’s top level as a referee.

Ben Foote has been promoted to ‘Gold Badge’ level by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

The Guernsey referee is one of only two Britons at such a level and officiated the men’s final at the World Team Championships in London earlier this month.

“The Gold Badge is for the elite level,” Foote explained to BBC Radio Guernsey.

“You get invited to the real big ones, the World Cups, the World Championships, the smashes – which is the equivalent of the tennis Grand Slams. You get direct invitations instead of just having to apply and hope you get into some of the big competitions.”

Foote has traveled the world with the sport from his home in the Channel Islands – competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games final on the Gold Coast and four years later in Birmingham.

Despite being a relatively quiet sport in Britain, table tennis is huge in some countries, especially China.

It means there is a lot of pressure to make the right decision, and there are a large crowd present.

“You get used to it, you have to block it out a little bit,” Foote says.

“The World Team Championships took place at Wembley Arena, so it’s quite a big stadium, with a capacity of 7,000, mainly Chinese fans.

“So the atmosphere was fantastic, very loud, but you just learn to shut it out and just get on with your job.”

With table tennis removed from the scaled-down Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer, Foote will not be able to make it a finals hat-trick at that event.

But he hopes his new status can help him take part in an Olympic Games for the first time in 2028.

“The Olympics are actually quite a small tournament, so they don’t need that many officials,” he says.

“I was lucky enough to participate as a volunteer in 2012, I was far from qualified at the time.

“I will sign up to go, I think there is a chance, it will be the same group of people going.”
