The Wolverhampton tournament sees Wisbech veterans test themselves against top class opposition
Wisbech Table Tennis Club players tested themselves against top class opposition at the final Veterans Masters tournament of the season in Wolverhampton.
Competing against experienced players from across Europe, the local contingent delivered several impressive performances this weekend.
On Saturday, Paul Rich had a strong run in the Over 40s Singles, winning two group matches before losing to the highly ranked Jason Ramage.
Rich next competed in the over-50 competition where he won all three of his group matches.
Serafim Melo also impressed, taking two wins in his group, including an excellent win over Jason Thompson, and also getting a walkover.
Wayne Mason matched that feat by winning all three of his group matches, including a thrilling five-set success against Radovan Zivkovic to take the lead 12-10.
In the men’s doubles over 40s, Melo and partner James Skilleter were defeated by second seeds Jason Ramage and Andy Wilkinson, while Rich and Mason lost to experienced duo Neil Charles and Costas Papantoniou.
Sunday proved more difficult for the Wisbech players.
Rich did not compete further into the fifties and left the event over forty, while Melo had a good win over Poland’s Boguslaw Okonek before losing to Neil Charles.
Mason’s campaign ended surprisingly when he went out in straight sets against former Norfolk player Neil Pickard.
The trio will now focus on next season’s European Veterans Championships in Latvia.
