AAPITA Emerging Leaders Mentorship Program elevates and strengthens the AAPI tennis community
“At the end of the mentoring program [I] I told her that I always want to be there for her and be a resource for her and her parents if they have questions during the stages she is going through in her tennis career. I’m just honored that she opened up and felt comfortable. It’s been really fun to see the little improvements she’s making and how she’s doing, and she seems really happy, which makes me happy, and that’s honestly the most important part.
Chang’s father, Chris, is happy his daughter participated in the program. He grew up playing junior tennis and eventually went on to play NCAA Division I. He knows the stress and difficulties that come with being at the top of the sport, and has seen how Crawford’s mentorship has played an important role in his daughter’s development.
“Sam was so amazing, he showed unconditional support where my daughter felt so comfortable and safe to express her emotions and what she was feeling, which made the mentorship that much better because Sam has experienced it. She had experience playing tennis at the top level and has experienced all the emotions that my daughter has experienced,” said Chris Chang. “[Blake’s] the perspective on the field changed, her maturity on and off the field changed, and she is learning. “I think one of the biggest insights was that she started to focus more on her development and improving and enjoying herself on the court versus the rankings and the results.”
Although the program is only in its second year, it has already had an immeasurable impact on mentors, mentees and their families. King hopes to grow the program and eventually run multiple cohorts throughout the year, targeting different age groups, and possibly create programs for coaches and parents.
“I’ve felt support from a lot of people throughout my career,” King said. “Coaches, family support staff, people who really believed in me, and that’s incredibly important for a tennis player, for an athlete, for their families, because it’s a tough sport. It takes a lot of commitment. And so if we can be just a small part of that journey where we can hopefully improve those players and their families, then I would say our job is done.”
