Wellens: Hockey alone can’t change NCAA’s age-based eligibility proposal – InForum
DULUTH – The NCAA is moving on
its new age-based eligibility proposal,
and be prepared to vote on it next month.
Under the new rules, student-athletes would receive five years of NCAA eligibility over a five-year period beginning in the academic year after high school graduation or after their 19th birthday – whichever comes first.
The entire men’s hockey is against the change,
because it would change the current development model of the sport from youth to professional level. Currently, men’s hockey players can defer their college enrollment for up to three years after graduating high school.
For Minnesotans, this means the opportunity to stay in high school all your senior year before playing a year or two of junior hockey, then heading off to college in hopes of making it to the pros.
You know, like Cole Koepke of the Winnipeg Jets or Noah Cates of the Philadelphia Flyers, just to name a few.

— has lobbied the NCAA to change its proposal, which would allow eligibility to begin the academic year after a student-athlete’s 19th birthday. The National Hockey League, USA Hockey, United States Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League are all involved.
The effort did not move the NCAA, which wrote as much on Friday
“Sport-specific exceptions and grace periods are not expected.”
Hockey isn’t the only sport expressing its displeasure over the 5-by-5 eligibility proposal. The sport has just been its most vocal since this all started in April.
Olympic sports, such as swimming and hockey, will be impacted as their athletes can no longer benefit from an Olympic redshirt – as women’s hockey players once did.
Baseball, football and lacrosse players who choose to attend a year of prep school between high school and college will lose a year of eligibility.
Student-athletes are given an extra year of eligibility this late in the recruiting cycle for most sports
because of the roster limits the House settlement imposed on teams a year ago.
College hockey is uniting to challenge the NCAA’s proposed “5-in-5” rule that would allow athletes to compete for five years.
Hockey’s unique development pipeline means that some players’ eligibility period can decrease to 2-3 years. The sport does not want to be ‘collateral damage’.

The NCAA – which still has not addressed international students – is not creating the uniformity it thinks it is creating.
It’s time for hockey to get off the ice and help other sports find other prominent voices on the field, pools and diamonds to lobby the NCAA to change its proposal — and possibly delay it even further — before it is voted on in late June.
It’s unlikely that a concerted effort will move the NCAA much unless basketball and/or football decides to flip and oppose “5-in-5.” But it’s worth a try.
