Superior girls break drought, Valley Christian boys repeat
MISSOULA – No matter what happened Saturday in the Class B/C boys tennis doubles final, at least one Walter brother from Conrad would become a state champion.
It turned out to be two. And the Bork family of Valley Christian also boasts two state champions.
Noah and Caleb Walter teamed up to defeat brother Evan and his teammate Linkyn Denzer, putting the latter team in second place for the second time in a row.
Valley Christian’s Olander Bork climbed to the top of the boys’ singles podium after placing second as an eighth-grader and freshman. Bork defeated Cut Bank’s Kage Ramey in the finals.
Eighth-grader Tia Bork followed up her brother’s singles titles with one of her own, defeating Jefferson’s Bailee Silvonen in the girls’ singles final.
Zoe Donner and Alexis Clark of Fort Benton claimed the girls doubles title with a win over Jorja Morris and Bailey Anderson of Simms.
The Valley Christian boys captured a repeat team championship, just behind Conrad. Valley Christian finished with 35 points, while Conrad had 33. Cut Bank (17) was one point better than Fort Benton for third place.
The race for the girls team was tight throughout the tournament, but in the end Superior came out on top for the school’s first tennis title since 1999. The Bobcats had 30 points, with Fort Benton (28) and Valley Christian (25) a close second and third.
Consolation champions were Terry’s Jonah Holden in boys’ singles; Fletcher DeGroot and Grayson Thurman of Valley Christian in boys doubles; Superior’s Josie Crabb in girls’ singles; and Caitrin Harrington and Sammy McHugh of Missoula Loyola in girls doubles.
