U.S. officials say it could take days for Tehran to respond to Trump’s tougher conditions for a possible deal to end the nearly three-month-old war.

President Donald Trump has sought to change several terms of a proposal to end the US-Israeli war against Iran, according to US media reports, as a finalized deal remains elusive.

The New York Times reported Saturday that Trump’s changes involved toughening the terms of the deal, and the United States sent the new framework back for review by Iran, according to officials familiar with the matter.

The report says the implications of these changes are not immediately clear. However, Axios reported that Trump wanted to strengthen several points of the deal that he considered important, such as the fate of Iranian nuclear materials.

A senior US official told Axios that Trump had been informed that Iran’s response could take three days.

“They are literally in caves and don’t use email,” the official told Axios.

“There will be an agreement. We will see how imminent it is. We are prepared to wait for the president to get what he is asking for. It could take a week. It could be less. It could be more. By the turn of the week, we hope to have something,” the official added.

Separately, Iran’s chief negotiator said on Sunday that Tehran would not accept any deal with Washington unless it fully guarantees Iranian rights.

“There is no trust in the words and promises of the enemy. Our only criterion is to obtain tangible results before fulfilling our commitments in return,” Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said after taking oath as “re-elected Speaker of Parliament”.

The new adjustments could prolong negotiations between the sides for several days before a decision is made on whether the deal would end the war, which began after the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28.

US sources told the AFP news agency that the proposal was awaiting Trump’s approval, but he made no decision after a meeting of the White House Situation Room on Friday.

Richard Weitz, a senior fellow at the NATO Defense College, says that “the longer we have an agreed standard ceasefire and perhaps an eventual peace deal, there is an increased risk that kinetic operations will resume” in the US-Israeli war against Iran.

“The risks are moderate compared to the interest in reaching an agreement, in which both sides feel satisfied and therefore stick to this agreement rather than trying to revise it later, which could lead to even greater escalation,” he told Al Jazeera.

Trump said his priorities for any deal included Iran’s pledge never to develop nuclear weapons and reopening the blockaded Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes.

On Saturday, the Iranian military’s central headquarters Khatam al-Anbiya reasserted the country’s control over the strait, warning that foreign commercial and military vessels would be targeted if they did not comply with regulations governing passage through the strategic waterway.

Tehran has also repeatedly stated that it does not intend to produce nuclear weapons. In March 2025, Tulsi Gabbard, the former director of US national intelligence, told Congress that Washington “continues to assess that Iran is not building nuclear weapons.”
