SOUTO AVENGES UK OPEN SHAW, FILLER, SZEWCZYK advance to semi-finals | 2026 British Open Pool Championship

Jonas Souto got sweet revenge against defending champion Aloysius Yapp to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 UK Open Pool Championship, where he advanced to the final four alongside former champion Joshua Filler, home favorite Jayson Shaw and Poland’s Wojciech Szewczyk.

The 5th UK Open Pool Championship continues at the Brentwood Center from 26-31 May. The World Nineball Tour delivers six days of world-class 9-ball action and drama, with fierce competition for one of the sport’s most prestigious Open titles.

Jonas Souto’s run to the semi-finals began with a resounding 10-4 win over Hanoi Open champion Pijus Labutis before setting up a rematch with defending champion Aloysius Yapp in last year’s UK Open final.

Twelve months ago, it was Yapp who emerged victorious, claiming his first UK Open title. However, this time Souto turned things around and won 10-8, ending Singapore’s title defense.

“Two very good wins today and I’m really happy with the way I played. Everyone knows how strong Aloysius is, he proved it again this week and of course he beat me in the final last year so this win means a lot,” said Souto.

“I thought I was patient and took my chance when it came. You have to do that against a player like him. I have so much respect for Aloysius. He is one of the toughest competitors in our sport.”

“I’m confident heading into tomorrow. Sometimes you need things to go the way you want them to, and today I felt like I had a little bit of luck when I needed it. Now I just want to keep doing my job, trust my game, and see where it takes me.”

Former champion Joshua Filler also returns to the UK Open semi-finals. He went on to pursue his second UK Open crown, beating Mario He and former world champion Niels Feijen.

The German once again showed his trademark resilience and firepower to secure two wins to reclaim one of the sport’s most iconic titles.

“I always enjoy coming to the UK Open because I have great memories here. Every year is different, but I try to give every match my full concentration,” Filler said.

“I was happy with my performance today. The breaks weren’t where I wanted to be, so I had to rely on potting and my overall game. It will be a test against an opponent like Niels. He’s a great champion and I’m happy with how I handled the game.”

Standing between Filler and the final is home favorite Jayson Shaw. Jayson Shaw continued his historic run by becoming the first British player to reach the semi-finals of the UK Open.

Shaw beat fellow Brit Dean Shields and former Mosconi Cup teammate David Alcaide to keep his hopes of a first home win in the tournament’s history alive.

“It’s never an easy match because David is always a tough opponent and he’s a good friend of mine. He played really well early on but I was able to be patient and capitalize when the opportunity came,” said Shaw.

“The breaks have been really good this week and that’s a big plus. If you can consistently make the ball and control the cue ball, life becomes a lot easier.”

“Josh is one of the best players in the world and we’ve had some great battles over the years. I’m looking forward to it. If he keeps playing this week, he’ll give himself every opportunity.”

Completing the semi-final line-up was Poland’s Wojciech Szewczyk, who came within striking distance of winning his first Matchroom Major title after beating former UK Open champion Eklent Kaçi and Japan’s Naoyuki Oi.

The Pole continued his impressive run through the field and is now just two games away from achieving the biggest title of his career.

“I’m delighted to be back in the semifinals. The last time I reached this stage at a Matchroom Major was at the World Championships, so it feels good,” said Szewczyk.

“I knew we had a difficult match today. Ecklent and Naoyuki are both world-class players, so beating them in succession gave me a lot of confidence.”

With defending champion Aloysius Yapp now out of the tournament, a new UK Open champion will be crowned on the day of the final. Can Souto complete his redemption story? Can Filler reclaim the title?
