Ohio State’s football commitment makes it clear he probably won’t make it to Columbus

It’s coming. Not anytime soon, but sometime between now and National Signing Day, Huntington Beach’s four-star quarterback Brady Edmunds will somersault Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Edmunds recently admitted that he is still looking for something that could convince him to retire from the Buckeyes. He has given the Northwestern Wildcats and home-area UCLA Bruins a chance to woo him; he’s just not convinced yet.

“Right now I don’t know because it hasn’t been shown to me,” Edmunds said when asked what would draw him away from Ohio State. “That’s the hardest part about it. I’ve been at Ohio State my whole life; it would be hard for another team to undo it. But we’ll see.

“(UCLA and Northwestern are) kind of preaching to play early and this and that. Ultimately, I don’t know where it’s going to go from here. College football changes day to day. Just being able to hold on to some of those (offers) until the final decision comes. But as of right now, it’s Ohio State.”

Edmunds rather hinted at an exit earlier this year in May, I said, “I love Ohio State and definitely still see myself there. However, I think it’s smart to protect myself and stay out of this.” It is unclear what he would be protecting himself from. But maybe he sees the writing on the wall in the QB room next year and beyond.

Tavien St. Clair will be Ohio State’s QB for at least two years

Julian Sayin will get his two years as the team’s QB1. Barring a big breakout season for St. Clair in 2027, he would most likely remain in CBus for a fourth season in 2028. Edmunds may not have the time to wait. He may be protecting his collegiate eligibility.

Edmunds’ future could be determined by whatever Congress comes up with to “save” college sports. There have been proposals to keep eligibility for each player at five years, but nothing has materialized. Courts will challenge almost anything that limits the earning potential for players.

If things continue as they have been, Edmunds could still be against waiting until his third year to play meaningful snaps for the Buckeyes. Earning a lot of money by sitting on the couch is fun, but some people have too much of a competitive drive to sit outside for long periods of time. Especially when there are bigger salaries to be the featured guy elsewhere.

Maybe Edmunds hasn’t gotten the money from anyone else yet. There’s definitely not much proof of concept at UCLA, where Bob Chesney is in his freshman year coming from the James Madison Dukes. Chip Kelly hasn’t integrated his offense at Northwestern yet. Maybe the 2026 season will convince Edmunds. From both teams. The Wildcats will travel to the “Shoe” in November to try to make a compelling case.

Edmunds’ next move is unclear. It just feels like he’s looking for a reason not to wear Scarlet and Gray, which means he probably won’t.
