Weymouth and District Table Tennis League presentation evening
Members gathered at the Springfield Club in Weymouth on Tuesday, May 19, where chairman Raj Lehal said the league had enjoyed another strong year with ‘closely and keenly contested’ divisions and more talented youngsters breaking through.
He said: “The league had another successful season with a rising standard of play and an increasing number of talented young people. All three divisions were closely and keenly contested with many exciting matches. The success at provincial and national level is an indicator of our progress.”
The county’s success came in April when Weymouth and District TTL lifted the Inter-County League Cup for the first time, beating teams from rival Dorset leagues Blackmore Vale, Bournemouth and Wimborne. The competition featured two teams in each competition, with overall winners determined based on combined scores.
Tim O’Mahoney, captain of the A team, said: “Both Weymouth teams played at a very high level and scored great results which ultimately led to us winning the Inter County League Cup for the first time.”
On the national stage, Preston A Division 1 player Thomas Hepburn was crowned national champion in the 2–5 wheelchair class.
There was also national recognition for Preston E youngster Lottie Griffiths, who reached the quarter-finals of the English Schools Championship in the under 11 category. Both players received special awards from the competition to mark their achievements.
Division titles and individual awards were presented on the evening.
Division 1 was won by Park District Lions, who were back in the competition after a while, with their strong side seeing them home as “deserved winners”. Preston A finished second.
Preston B took the Division 2 crown and were promoted to Division 1 after a hard-fought campaign, with Shipton Gorge B finishing second.
In Division 3, Preston F took the title and promotion to Division 2, with Springfield C in second place.
The best player trophies also went to the best players in each division.
Tim O’Mahoney, from Colliton He was also elected the league’s new press officer.
In Division 2, Preston A’s Sam London completed his rise from Division 3 by taking the Best Player award and also collecting the Stan Smith Most Improved Player trophy. Springfield D youngster Harry Thornhill was named the best player in Division 3.
There was an upset in the Handicap Cup final as bottom Division 1 side Preston E took on top Division 1 side Park District Lions. In a thrilling match, Preston E came out on top to lift the cup.
Concluding the meeting, chairman Raj Lehal thanked coaches Mick Hogan and Tony Jackson in particular “for the fantastic work they do with youth development”, and praised Preston Table Tennis Club for running an “excellent club” that catered for all levels and fielded six teams in the competition. He wished the members a nice summer and was already looking forward to next season.
