De Minaur secures second week at Wimbledon with win against ‘Aussie slayer’

Alex de Minaur won his match against Zach Svajda at Wimbledon, scoring 6-2 5-7 6-2 6-4 in 2 hours and 41 minutes.

American player Svajda had earned a reputation as the “Aussie Slayer” at the French Open earlier this year, where he knocked out both Alexei Popyrin and Adam Walton.

But world number 6 Minaur held on in the third round of Wimbledon collision on Saturday local time, come out on top in a battle between the two fast players.

The crowd cheered throughout the match, with De Minaur getting excited with the “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” chants.

Speaking about his opponent, De Minaur called the 23-year-old a “great player”.

“He’s quite clumsy, plays fantastic tennis from both sides and has one of the best running forehands on the cross court I’ve ever seen.

“I played really well to hold on there.“

With the victory, de Minaur will officially reach the second week (round of 16) of Wimbledon for the third year in a row.

On Monday he will face Flavio Cobolli, the French Open finalist of Italy, or Karen Khachanov, the two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist of Russia.

De Minaur controlled the opening set against his young opponent and sealed the set in a one-sided half hour.

At the start of the second set, De Minaur seemed to be in full control again, but Svajda immediately managed to hit back.

Svajda scored a set point at 5-4 on De Minaur’s serve, marking a key moment in the competition as he raced to the net to take control.

Unfortunately for the American player, it didn’t take long for De Minaur to level again.

In the third set, de Minaur broke four times and was broken twice in the third set as Svajda started to feel the pace. A medical timeout was called as Svajda needed treatment on his left thigh.

De Minaur remained in control for the rest of the match and secured his place on Monday.
