Red Wings Russian Five member finds new job
He has been out of work since being fired at the end of the season as coach of the KHL’s Moscow club Dynamo. Detroit Red Wings Russian Five icon Slava Kozlov has a paid job again. Next season he will work for a team that will become a second home for former Red Wings.
Kozlov joins the KHL Shanghai Dragons as an assistant coach. He was brought to the team by the club’s new president, Kozlov’s former Atlanta Thrashers teammate Ilya Kovalchuk. He agreed to a two-year contract.
“I was told that they were creating a new team, a completely different project,” Kozlov said Russian website Sport-Express. “That intrigued me. The chaos of last year will certainly no longer be there.”
Kozlov took over as coach of Moscow Dynamo when Alexei Kudashov was fired mid-season.
Another former Red Wings player, Gerard Gallant, started last season as head coach of the Shanghai Dragons. But the team waited until late summer to build a roster and was left stranded on the ice.
“What happened last season cannot happen again,” Kozlov said. “Both the failed preseason and the long, unsuccessful stretches all influenced the end result.
“The team looked bad physically and stopped competing for a play-off spot after the New Year.”
Former Red Wings who love China
The only Chinese team in the KHL, the Dragons were originally known as Kunlun Red Star. Since joining the KHL in 2016, the club has always enjoyed an influx of former Red Wings.
In addition to Kozlov and Gallant, other ex-Detroit players who have suited up for the club include Ryan Sproul, Jake Chelios, Magnus Hellberg, Tomas Jurco, Teemu Pulkkinen and Gemel Smith.
Familiar faces signed up for next season include ex-Red Wings Martin Frk and Givani Smith.
“We looked at Frk in May, when I was head coach of Dynamo Moscow,” Kozlov said. “I recommended him.
“He is an attacker with a good shot who has been playing at a high level for a long time.”
Although the Dragons call Shanghai home, the truth is that the team has always played in Russia. However, the plan is to move the franchise to China in two years.
“The team will most likely compete in St. Petersburg for two years,” Kozlov said. “If a move to China takes place, I am ready for that interesting challenge.”
