(KTLA) Google offers users a new option to remove personal information from search results.

In a blog post on Wednesday, the company confirmed that it has updated its policy on removing personal content in response to the ongoing “evolving” Internet.

Google acknowledged that open access to information is a key search goal, but the company said it wouldn’t if it could cause potential harm.

“The availability of personal contact information online can be offensive and can be used in harmful ways, including unwanted direct contact and physical harm,” Google wrote. I am. “And in some cases, we’ve received feedback that we want the ability to remove this kind of information from our searches.”

The new policy allows users to request that their phone number, email address, or address be removed from search results. This can be especially important if the information is maliciously and intentionally shared by a third party. This is also known as doxing.

However, Google states that you can only remove this personal content from search results, not the entire Internet. If you want to remove your personal information from a particular platform or website, you still need to contact that hosting service directly.

Google also said it would not remove information from public records, including government and official sources.

Google previously allowed users to request that other types of sensitive information, such as banking information and social security numbers, be removed from the search. According to a blog post, with this latest update, Google wants to give users more “tools they need to protect their safety and privacy online.”

Users can submit a removal request to Google for evaluation on the support site.
