Pentagon names Lt. Gen. Admiral to command U.S. military Europe and Africa

The Pentagon on Thursday named Lt. Gen. Kevin D. Admiral as the next commander of the U.S. military in the Europe and Africa theater of operations.

The admiral, who is currently commander of III Corps and Fort Hood, Texas, could take over the leadership post from Gen. Christopher Donahue, who unexpectedly left the command earlier this month after just 18 months in the role. Since Donahue’s departure, Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie has served as acting commander.

If confirmed, the admiral would also serve as commander of NATO’s Allied Land Command, coordinating with 104 countries in the USAREUR-AF area of ​​responsibility. He would remain a three-star, even though his role was previously a four-star position.

Before leading III Corps and Fort Hood, the admiral served as commanding general of the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, and in Poland, and director of force management in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, according to his official Army biography.

Donahue’s departure in early July came amid broad changes in Pentagon leadership under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who in April called on U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to resign and retire before the end of his usual four-year term.

Since taking office, Hegseth has removed more than a dozen senior military officials, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown and former Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti.
