LeakyCLI vulnerability exposes AWS and Google Cloud credentials

Security researchers have discovered a new vulnerability affecting command-line tools used in cloud environments.

This flaw, dubbed “LeakyCLI” by the Orca Security team, leaks sensitive credentials into logs, posing a potential risk to organizations leveraging AWS and Google Cloud platforms.

This issue mirrors a previously identified vulnerability in Azure CLI (CVE-2023-36052, CVSS score 8.6) that Microsoft addressed last November. Despite Microsoft's fix, AWS and Google Cloud CLI are still susceptible to the same flaw.

The vulnerability is due to certain commands within these CLIs inadvertently exposing environment variables that contain sensitive information.

An attacker could exploit this exposure and gain access to sensitive credentials such as passwords and keys, which could potentially compromise resources within the affected repository. This risk is especially evident in continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.

“While CLI commands are expected to run in a secure environment by default, they can pose a security threat when combined with a CI/CD pipeline,” reads an advisory Orca published today. It is written.

Orca notified both Google and AWS immediately after the discovery, and both companies said they considered this behavior to be within expected design parameters.
