Defense Innovation Unit Project Makes Supercomputers More Accessible

A Defense Innovation Unit project to link the Department of Defense's high-performance computers to cloud-based services could soon provide real-time, high-speed data processing to military users around the world.

DIU's mission is to help the Department of Defense better leverage commercial technology, and the 18-month effort involved working with two computing companies, San Francisco-based Rescale and Chicago-based Parallel Works.

The two companies are partnering with the Department of Defense's High Performance Computing Modernization Program to make supercomputer-based decision-making tools more accessible across the department, from researchers and acquisition officials to operators in the field.

Militaries use supercomputers to rapidly crunch large amounts of data that can be used to inform decisions and simulate complex scenarios. For example, troops can use high-performance computing to understand how weather forecasts will affect planned ISR operations. Or engineers designing lightweight body armor for soldiers can use supercomputers to study materials.

To perform this work, the Department of Defense relies heavily on physical computers, which are expensive to purchase and maintain. Through their work with DIU, Rescale and Parallel Works have demonstrated that these computing tools can be delivered on the cloud, meaning users can take advantage of their capabilities without having access to a physical computer.

The researchers 1720468571 Benjamin Parsons, chief technology officer for the High Performance Computing Modernization Program, said in a June 27 statement that the company can now access cloud resources to augment work at its on-premise centers, giving it access to a wider variety of hardware and the ability to scale resources beyond what's currently possible, all within a single, secure, easy-to-use environment.

The two companies expect to be awarded a production contract later this year, enabling them to bring the high-performance computing platform to more users.

Matt McKee, chief operating officer at Rescales, said in a July 3 interview with C4ISRNET that cloud-based computing platforms are playing a key role in the civilian sector, which is using these tools to significantly reduce engineering cycle times for new product releases.

He said these capabilities could transform how the Defense Department develops, tests and fields new systems over the next three to five years.
