The National Network for Innovation in Sport and Health aims to accelerate the growth of medical technology across Swansea.

Swansea University, with support from the local health board and the Swansea Bay City Deal, has launched the National Network for Innovation in Sport and Health (NNIISH) as part of efforts to accelerate the growth of medical technology, healthcare innovation and sports technology in the region.

A key focus of the new initiative is to support collaboration between the NHS, industry and academia, and the universities hope that the presence of NNIISH will strengthen existing collaborations, generate new partnerships and drive investment in the sector.

NNIISH describes itself as “fostering an ideal environment for innovation and growth,” adding that its overarching goal is to establish a diverse community of stakeholders, including local SMEs, startups and multinational corporations, “to build a vibrant ecosystem where entrepreneurs and industry leaders can collaborate, share insights and drive change.”

To date, projects undertaken by the network have investigated topics such as technology to assist lung transplants by delivering oxygen directly to the blood to increase remaining lung capacity, ways to support healthcare teams to efficiently collect and use patient data, and how AI analytics can be deployed to aid early cancer detection. NNIISH has also highlighted opportunities such as a fully-funded PhD scholarship at Swansea University that aims to investigate how 5G technology and wearables can improve the health and wellbeing of older people, and a scholarship to research the effectiveness of virtual reality exposure therapy in treating gambling disorder.
