A healthy innovation ecosystem fosters green technology transfer
Governments, industry and universities need to work together to bring impactful inventions to market
Stakeholders from government, industry and academia must work together to foster an effective innovation ecosystem, panelists said at a session on inclusive sustainability at the 2024 World Conference on Sustainable Development in Bangkok. The panel, held in collaboration with the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), brought together academics and entrepreneurs to discuss how Hong Kong has established itself as a research-intensive innovation hub.
“Facilitating impactful technology transfer requires universities to collaborate with industry and government, said Angus Yip Hin Lap, professor in the university's School of Materials Science and Engineering and School of Energy and Environment, and deputy director of the Hong Kong Clean Energy Institute. CityUHK provides a great ecosystem to foster technology transfer and encourage faculty and students to turn their innovative ideas into real products.”
“Universities are very research-focused, but we hope that our faculty’s research prototypes can be applied to commercial products and not just paper publications on bookshelves,” says Edwin Tso-Chiang, Associate Dean for Internationalisation and Outreach and Associate Professor in the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Clean Energy Institute specifically focuses on clean energy research to generate knowledge and serve as a platform for start-ups and technology commercialization. The institute has many professors from different disciplines who work together to develop new energy solutions, Yip said. The institute investigates and advises the government on energy generation, energy storage, energy conservation, energy distribution and energy policy.
Tso also targeted investors, saying they are welcome to invest in faculty projects, noting that the Hong Kong government has a number of funding schemes to encourage investment and entrepreneurship. For every US$1 an investor puts in, the Hong Kong government will match it, he said.
CityUHK postdoctoral student Martin Zhu Yihao is co-founder of i2Cool, a technology start-up spun out from research developed at the university. The company has developed a patented passive radiative cooling paint that can be used to save energy. The technology cools buildings without the need for electricity, reducing carbon emissions and reliance on air conditioning.
The startup was incubated by HK Tech 300, an innovation and entrepreneurship training program by CityUHK. Initially, we were all scientists. We didn't know anything about commercialization, promotion or marketing, Zhu explained. But through the program, we connected with mentors in the market and learned from them how to run a business. Now, the technology is being used in various sectors around the world, from logistics to car manufacturers, he said.
Luo Yiping, secretary-general of the Greater Bay Area Carbon Neutral Association, said green finance is not charity but a good business model. The Greater Bay Area consists of nine cities and two special administrative regions in South China, and Luo has played an active role in connecting green finance and green technology.
But a major obstacle to the spread of green technologies in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is policy, says Gary Yong Man-yu, chairman of the Smart Cities Consortium. “Each city is like a tier, it has its own technology and regional policies. To cluster, we need to consider not only technology, but also logistics flows, capital flows and information flows.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
