Google expands Emoji Kitchen for World Emoji Day

Today is World Emoji Day, and Google used the opportunity to announce the expansion of its Emoji Kitchen platform and also preview new Emoji Kitchen effects coming soon to YouTube Shorts.

Google first launched Emoji Kitchen on Android devices in 2020, allowing users to create mashups of different emojis and essentially combine them to create new emojis.

And now, Google has brought Emoji Kitchen to search, allowing you to create your own mutant emojis right within the search engine.

According to Google:

Type “emoji kitchen” into the search bar and click “Start Cooking.” Starting today, you'll see a pop-up with two tabs. The Combine tab lets you combine two emojis of your choice. The new Explore tab lets you select any one emoji to see how it can be combined with any other single emoji. Browse recipes for inspiration.

Combining existing emojis to create your own hybrid creations could be a fun way to celebrate World Emoji Day.

YouTube Shorts is also getting an Emoji Kitchen update, with emoji mashup effects coming soon.

Finally, Google also previewed the newest emojis that will soon be coming after being approved by the Unicode Consortium.

A total of seven new emojis will be added as part of the Unicode 16.0 release: Fingerprint, Leafless Tree, Harp, Splat, Face with Bags Under the Eyes, Shovel, and Root Vegetable. These new emojis will be available as web fonts in both color and monochrome this September, on Android phones by March 2025, and across your favorite Google products in early 2025.

So if you want to tell someone that you found a stolen harp buried under a leafless tree, that the body bears fingerprints that identify the thief, and that you're exhausted after many sleepless nights searching for the harp, you'll soon be able to say it in a more concise way.
