There are just six weeks left until Google's sweeping Play Store purge begins, with thousands of apps expected to disappear. But with these plans still reverberating in the Android developer community, Google has announced some more good news for those worried about what will happen to apps, especially if they come from third-party stores or are directly installed: Currently, when the Play Store's Play Protect flags apps on a device as potentially high risk, users can't rescan their device until those apps are removed, but a rescan button has been added in the beta, giving those apps a second chance.

According to a report from Android Authority, which discovered the code, Play Protect's approach can be annoying when it falsely classifies an app as harmful and prevents the remaining apps from being scanned until they are uninstalled. The upcoming Rescan button will allow users to run another scan on potentially harmful apps detected in a previous scan without uninstalling them. This will be especially useful for users who install apps from third-party sources that are often falsely classified as harmful.

This new option is buried in the beta and isn't available in the current Play Store release. As always, there's no word on when this will be available, but with Android 15 due to be released soon and bringing with it a host of security innovations, it likely won't be too long.

While the new low-quality app rules allow Google to root out a significant percentage of risky apps that make it onto the Play Store, they don't prevent the worst from third-party stores or direct app installs.
