New Pixel 9 Pro details confirm Google's big design decision

Google may have confirmed the upcoming launch of its Pixel 9 smartphone, but there are still some secrets about the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL that it's still not revealing, including the exact dimensions of the new Pro models.

New details about the design of the upcoming Pixel 9 smartphone family have been revealed by prominent leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer of Onleaks, and his details follow Google's confirmation last week of three Pixel phones, rather than the two that were announced last year.

Strictly speaking, there are four models, with the exception of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It's the successor to last year's Pixel Fold, but the 2023 foldable wasn't classified as part of the mainline Pixel 8 family, presumably to maintain some distinction between consumer candy bar phones and more esoteric foldables. This year, the Fold will be joining the Pixel 9 line, but by its very nature, it will likely remain a more specialist choice due to its unique design.

That leaves the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. The obvious change is the physical size, with options for a 6.3-inch or 6.8-inch screen over the two standard Pro models. It's important to know where the XL and regular models fit in. Last year's Pixel 8 Pro offered a bigger screen and higher specs than the Pixel 8. This year, that bigger, more powerful role is filled by the Pixel 9 Pro XL.

The Pixel 9 Pro isn't a direct replacement for the Pixel 8 Pro, and is similar in size to the Pixel 9 but with higher specs in a smaller form factor.

It's an interesting middle ground. There's a lot of clamor online for a small phone with specs and performance on par with larger flagships, and there are enthusiastic fans, but no breakout stars have emerged in the small phone category. It remains to be seen whether the Pixel 9 Pro will be considered a small phone, when last year's Pixel 8 wasn't.

I'm excited to see a breakdown of the three devices, and I suspect the 9 Pro will be the slowest-selling of all the standard Pixel phones, even if it proves to be the most appealing to online geeks.
