Taal volcano still spews gases; 17 volcanic earthquakes recorded

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Taal volcano continued its discharge operations on Monday, and 17 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours.

In the 8 a.m. bulletin, PHIVOLCS said 16 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes as well as a low-level aftershock were also observed.

On Sunday, sulfur dioxide emission from the volcano was 22,628 tons/day.

PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 3 was still in effect over Taal Volcano on Monday.

“At the third alert level, magma erupting from the main crater can cause an explosive eruption,” she said.

“It is likely that there will be eruptions similar to those seen on July 1 in the afternoon,” said PHIVOLCS Director and Under Secretary for Science Renato Solidum Jr. He said in an interview on Aonang Palita on Monday.

Solidum said this was due to the high level of sulfur dioxide being emitted, similar to the situation before the July 1 eruption.

He said that the magma is moving slowly at this time, in contrast to the rapid movement of magma in January 2020.

“Although not as powerful as the January 2020 scale, it is in Activity 1, Phase 1 of current activity. But its volcanic eruption can cause a stream of lava density. She added that activities in Taal Lake should also not be allowed.

Meanwhile, communities on the shores of Taal Lake must be on the alert, taking precautions against ash flying into the air, and preparing for evacuation if necessary.
