Manhattan Beach-based Skechers donates $1 million to Haiti earthquake relief – Press Telegram

Skechers gave $1 million to organizations coming to aid Haiti after the deadly earthquake that rocked the country earlier this month. The shoe and apparel company is challenging members of the community to help raise more money to help the stricken nation.

The money will be split between three organizations: a community-organized relief effort, Hope for Haiti, and World Central Kitchen. The three provide immediate assistance to people in Haiti recovering from a disaster that killed more than 2,000 people, injured more than 12,000, destroyed tens of thousands of homes and left more than 300 people missing.

SKECHERS, based in Manhattan Beach, is donating more than 10,000 pairs of new BOBS clogs to the Haitian American Congregation.

“This is just the beginning,” said Michael Greenberg, president of Skechers, in a press release. “We expect to raise significant additional funds through the Million Dollar Challenge for Haiti (which) will encourage our ambassadors, partners and employees to donate with us.”

CORE, founded by actor Sean Penn after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, funds emergency relief, disaster preparedness, environmental resilience, and community building. Hope for Haiti works to improve the quality of life for Haitian people, especially children. World Central Kitchen offers free meals to people around the world affected by natural disasters and other crises.
