St. Helen’s eruption
The fly ash particles created a thunderbolt – which in turn created forest fires. About 540 million tons of ash emitted from Mount St Helens that day – the equivalent of a football field piled up 150 miles high. The image above is one of a series that won the Pulitzer Prize for public news photography in 1981.
Why Mount St. Helens erupted
Cascades Mountain Range – including St. Helen’s Mountain – consisted of two parts of the Earth’s surface extending to each other.
These parts, called tectonic plates, float on a sea of magma lava deep in the ground. The Juan de Fuca plate is pushed down the North American plate creating high pressure and hot temperatures.
This pressure and these hot temperatures force molten rock to the surface, creating a series of volcanoes.
Mount St. Helens erupted several times over the centuries – most notably in the 1800’s – but it has been relatively quiet since 1857.
“Stone winds”
The explosion exploded at an altitude of 1,300 feet from the summit of Mount St. Helen and moved abroad at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.
About 150 miles of forests – most of them 180-foot-tall fir trees – have been cut, uprooted or spread in half by rocks of all sizes moving at enormous speed. Rocks, dirt and ash forced water out of Spirit Lake and rivers around Mount St. Helen. Silt will block the Columbia River, about 40 miles or downstream, reducing travel from only 39 feet to 13 feet.
The material that came out of the mountain was very hectic 1000 degrees. Two weeks later, some of the pumice covering the mountain was still 780 degrees.
Airborne ash
540 million tons of volcanic ash was thrown 15 miles into the air, as the wind carried hundreds of miles away.
The eruption lasted for nine hours. During that time, thick layers of ash spread across Washington and within Idaho and began small amounts of precipitation to the northwest and midwest, over an area of more than 22,000 square miles.
Estimated number of Mount St. Helen eruptions:
dead 57 dead
◼ More than 200 houses and cabins
◼ 185 miles of road
15 miles of rail
◼ More than 4 billion feet of salable wood
7 Nearly 7,000 large animals
A total of about $ 1.1 billion

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
