The Texas Panhandle was rocked by the strongest earthquake to hit the region

LUBBOCK, Texas – A 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook the Texas Panhandle early Thursday morning, one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in Texas.

The effects of the earthquake were felt throughout the rural area and as far south as Oklahoma and New Mexico.

According to the USGS, the quake occurred at 5:21 a.m. about 24 miles southeast of Spearman near the top of the Texas-Oklahoma border. On social media, Spearman residents said the earthquake shook homes. Some in Oklahoma City, about 250 miles away, reported feeling the effects of the quake.

No structural damage or injuries have been reported so far. The US Geological Survey expects economic losses to be minimal.

Harrell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Amarillo, said the quake originated in northwest Roberts County, about 50 miles south of Spearman. Harrell said Thursday’s quake was stronger than what they usually see in the area.

“We’ve had smaller earthquakes over the last year or two,” Harrell said. “It happens here, but not frequently.”

In the past five years, Texas has experienced seven earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or higher. According to the earthquake’s path, the Spearman earthquake is the sixth largest in Texas history.

Last year, two of the largest earthquakes in state history struck West Texas. The earthquakes in that area are attributed to increased hydraulic fracturing in the area. It is not clear what caused the earthquake in the Panhandle.

“There are some minor fault lines in the Texas Panhandle that can cause weak to moderate earthquakes,” Harrell said. “It’s not very frequent.”
