The USGS says there were no reports of an earthquake after hundreds of Lake County residents reported a loud rumble.

The US Geological Survey said no earthquakes were recorded in the Lake County area after hundreds of residents reported feeling an unidentified thud or thump on Friday.

A website called Volcano Discovery, an unofficial website not run by the government, said there was an “unconfirmed earthquake or seismic-like event” near Lake Villa around 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Nearly 250 people have submitted user reports to the site about what they were exposed to.

Dozens of Lake County residents described what happened as a “loud bang” or “explosion.” Some residents said it caused the ground to shake and their homes to shake.

“We heard an explosion and our whole house shook,” a Lake Villa resident said.

“A loud rumble, followed by gurgling, shook the ceiling beams. Like thunder the rumble of rafters. “The garbage truck has landed in my front railing,” said another resident of Lake Villa.

The majority of residents who reported the incident were in the Lake Villa, Lydenhorst and Antioch area.

A USGS seismologist told the Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the USGS has not recorded any earthquakes in Illinois or Wisconsin.

The USGS is a government-run agency that monitors and reports on earthquakes.

A seismologist said Friday’s accident in Lake County could have been a variety of things, including a sonic boom, a detonated transformer, storms in the area, a quarry blast and more.

Christopher Coveley, deputy chief of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, said the mayor’s office received several 911 calls in the northern Lake County area about the incident.

There was no indication of anything exploding, Coveli said, and it is not known what caused the ground rumbling and the loud noises reported by residents.
