Another earthquake strikes Slyar, South Sulawesi

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Another earthquake struck off the Slyar Regency Islands in South Sulawesi on Friday morning, December 17th. However, the epicenter was different from the recent strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake and aftershock series last Tuesday 14th December. .

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded that the latest earthquake was centered on the sea or 127 kilometers southeast of the region and had a magnitude of 4.0. It happened at 03:12 West Indonesia Time (WIB).

The earthquake, which originated at a depth of 10 km, hit the Basilambina region of Slyar with a magnitude III of the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI).

The national agency also recorded a 4.3-magnitude earthquake in Ampana, Togo Una Una Regency in Central Sulawesi at 07:40 WIB. The earthquake was felt on the third scale of the MMI. The epicenter was observed in the sea, 10 km northwest of Ampana, at a depth of 10 km.

The BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator, Daryono, reported 632 aftershocks in the Flores Sea after the strong earthquake last Tuesday. According to experts, the main earthquake, whose epicenter was 112 km southwest of Larantuka, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), was caused by the activity of unidentified faults.
