Shortly before the 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit Los Angeles on Wednesday night, people were warned that shaking was coming.
“I looked at my phone and said to my husband, we have 30 seconds. There is an earthquake of five points coming,” said Jenny Brido, who lives in downtown Los Angeles, and her husband and daughter. Brace themselves.
“Other times when an earthquake happened, there was a moment,” Oh my God, what’s going on. “Instead, there was,” the earthquake is coming. Let’s get ready. ” And he was there! “
The California earthquake early warning system appears to have functioned as intended. When the massive ShakeAlert sensor network captured the first set of waves triggered by the earthquake near Ridgecrest, computers calculated the earthquake size, and built a map of expected vibration intensity across California.
This information was then provided to ShakeAlert Partners – apps including MyShake in California, which then sent alerts to people within certain areas expected to receive the highest levels of vibration. Last night, the app was supposed to include users all over Los Angeles.
“This is the first big successful warning we’ve received with MyShake,” said Angela Chung, seismologist at the Berkeley Seismology Laboratory and project scientist with ShakeAlert.

The app was released last October, and according to Chung, nearly 20,000 people reported on Wednesday.
While he worked for some, it was not for others, even those in the same neighborhood.
For example, I’m in Northridge, I installed the app and didn’t receive a warning, while geophysician Julian Lusus, who also lives in Northridge, did.
A non-science poll on Twitter got over thirty responses from a mix of people across Southern California, all with different companies and devices.
Receive some notifications. Others did not. There is no clear pattern presented itself.
Q earthquake!
Are you in SoCal? Did you receive an earthquake alert via ShakeAlert LA and / or MyShake last night?
If you want to share your phone type, service and your general location, it will be much appreciated.

Even Brideau, which has two phones – Samsung to work and iPhone as its personal device, with MyShake installed – has only been alerted on one of them.
“We don’t know for sure the exact reason why some people didn’t get that,” said Robert Michael de Groot, national coordinator of the US Geological Survey (ShaGAlert). “It could be a function for the mobile phone provider you’re working from … it could be a function of the operating system. It could be a number of different things.”
The MyShake team did not provide an explanation at the time of publication.
As for the LA app, ShakeAlert LA, it is unclear whether it sent notifications. The team did not respond at the time of publishing either.
However, as Chung and de Groot told me, the earthquake early warning system is in its early stages and will continue to improve overtime.
BIG ONE comes. get ready
We don’t want to scare you, but Big Big is coming. We don’t know when, but we know it will be at least 44 times stronger than Northridge and 11 times stronger than Ridge Crest earthquakes last year. To help you prepare, we’ve compiled a helpful reading list
