Google adapts New Zealand earthquake alert system to help refugees in Ukraine

“The system takes advantage of the low-latency alert mechanism we’ve built for earthquake alerts,” Dave Burke, Google’s Vice President of Engineering for Android, said on Twitter.

“The rollout of the system starts today and will ramp up to target all Android phones in Ukraine over the next few days.”

The search giant also detailed a number of other actions it just took to protest Vladimir Putin’s invasion in the blog.

This includes temporarily stopping the “vast majority” of its business activities in Russia, including blocking ads for all advertisers based in Russia, stopping payments functionality for most of its services, stopping new cloud subscriptions, and reducing YouTube monetization options.

“To help the growing numbers of refugees in the region, we are developing ways for companies to report if they provide services to refugees,” the company continued.

“We have all seen the images of the humanitarian and refugee catastrophe in Ukraine.

“From today, hotel owners in countries neighboring Ukraine can indicate in their business file whether they offer free or reduced accommodation to refugees.”

Local businesses will also be able to post in their business profiles on search and maps to provide assistance and services to refugees.

“As we gather this information over the coming weeks, we will allow people to quickly find these places in Search and Maps.”

Recent reports indicate that more than two million people have now left Ukraine as refugees since the Russian invasion on February 25.

Tech companies, including Facebook, Apple, Netflix, Sony, TikTok and more, have either suspended or restricted their services in the country, with almost universal condemnation of Putin’s actions.
