Relief Fund from the National Federation of Croats of the MUO Art Museum in Zagreb

June 6, 2020 – The 140th anniversary celebrations of the Museum of Arts and Crafts (MUO, Muzej za Umjetnost i Obrt), which started on February 17, have stopped with a strong earthquake of magnitude 5.5. Croatian Americans decided to help.

MUO Museum was badly damaged by the March 22 earthquake in Zagreb on Sunday morning. The series of aftershocks caused severe damage to the building and its artwork. The building has three severely damaged areas: the south wing corridor on the first and second floors, extending along the northern wall of the southern wing, and the southwest corner of the mezzanine on the main stairway between the ground and the first floor. The MUO Museum has suffered engineering damage but also many things and artifacts of value and importance to cultural heritage in Zagreb, Croatia and beyond were also damaged. In efforts to make a decision to help Zagreb in earthquake damage, the leadership of the cultural foundation of the National Union of Croatian Americans decided that it was better to focus on our group’s contribution to MUO. Our strong relationship with the MUO Museum dates back to December 2017, at a ceremony in which the museum exhibited “Madonna and Child”, a major work of the Dalmatian painter – Venice Andrea Schiavone (also known as Andrea Midolich), which was donated to NFCACF by Dr. Denko Podrug, now rented For the museum. Fortunately, the plate and two other items that NFCACF donated have remained undamaged.

On April 2, NFCACF launched a modest fundraising campaign to collect it immediately and send it to the MUO, by appealing to the NFCACF members to send a tax-free donation to NFCACF, noting the “MUO Earthquake Fund”. It was good news that a NFCACF supporter extended $ 5,000 of matching money to start our efforts on April 4. NFCACF raised funds from the group’s quarterly newsletter that was sent to all our members, 300 personal emails, and through Facebook communication. It has been recognized that the MUO Art Museum has urgent needs for this money to prevent further damage and begin required restoration.

“We are pleased to announce that we have raised US $ 21,000 for our NFCACF-MUO relief fund,” said NFCACF President Steve Rukavina proudly. It should be noted that all funds will be spent to clean, repair and carry out maintenance to protect and enhance the museum’s art collections. We would like to acknowledge that major contributions to the MUO Art Museum relief fund were received from Dr. Dinko Podrug, from Peter and Jessica Frankophan, The Staples Trust, and from the Chrysemire Benavic and AIC Foundation, and from an unknown donor.

NFCACF will host the 27th Annual Meeting of Delegates from June 5 to 6 and the web plenary on June 6 will include distinguished speakers: U.S. Ambassador Bob Kohurst, Croatian Ambassador Pierre Simonovic, former US Senator Mark Begic, President of the Croatian Brotherhood Federation Ed Pazo and Director of the MUO Museum of Miroslav Art Gasparovic. This year’s meeting will be all virtual meetings and on June 5, Croats will host a “happy hour” fundraising for the Special Olympics in Croatia.
