India: Rebuilding 56 schools destroyed in Nepal 2015 earthquake: The Tribune India

The Indian Embassy in Nepal said on Monday that it will rebuild 56 high schools – full of furniture and sustainable modern technology – that were destroyed in the powerful earthquake that struck the country in 2015.

The Indian embassy said in a statement that these schools will be rebuilt as part of the reconstruction work undertaken by the Indian government after the earthquake in Nepal, with a grant of approximately Rs 184 crore ($ 24.4 million).

Seven memoranda of understanding were signed between the Indian Embassy and the project implementation unit at the central level of the Nepalese Ministry of Education (CLPIU) to build 56 high secondary schools in Gorka, Nawakot, Dading, Dulaka, Kavrepalanchuk, Ramishab and Sindhupalchuk.

The Indian Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, will provide technical expertise in reconstruction work.

Schools will be built according to earthquake-resistant reconstruction standards in Nepal. The school infrastructure will consist of academic blocks, classrooms, furniture, and sanitation facilities.

“The Government of India remains committed to continuing to cooperate with the Government of Nepal and its agencies for the social and economic development of Nepal, including post-earthquake reconstruction projects,” the statement said.

In April 2015, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring nearly 22,000 others.

In 2016, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli earmarked 82,135 crore ($ 6.8 billion) in Nepalese rupees as part of a five-year plan to complete the rebuilding of all quake-hit academic and health facilities within three years.

Referring to five since the disaster in April, Nepal’s National Reconstruction Authority said that of the 7,555 schools requiring reconstruction, 5,598 schools had been completed in whole or in part.

The agency said that about 2,015 (26 percent) of the schools destroyed by the earthquake had not yet been built. PTI
