San Francisco contributors commemorate the city’s annual 1906 earthquake

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown and other dignitaries will be present Saturday to honor three longtime contributors to the city’s annual celebration of the April 18, 1906 earthquake.

The three will receive special vintage fire helmets at lunch at the legendary John’s Grill, an old San Francisco establishment, at 63 Ellis Street at 2 p.m. Saturday. in 2020 and 2021. Saturday’s rally honors the three winners of a Survivor Prize that hasn’t been presented since 2019.

David Ebarley, director of communications for the Oakland Fire Department, will receive the 2020 award. The 2021 award winner is Lt. Jonathan Baxter, Public Information Officer for the San Francisco Fire Department.

The 2022 awardee is former San Francisco Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes White, the first woman to serve as the department’s chief.

For decades, San Franciscans have gathered on April 18 at 4:30 a.m. at Lotta Fountain on Kearney and Geary Streets to commemorate the 1906 earthquake. A similar event is scheduled for Monday, the event’s 116th anniversary. The Sabbath event honors individuals who have contributed to the festivities.
