6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan

A strong earthquake of between 6.1 and 6.6 degrees has hit the coast of Taiwan – but there is no danger of a tsunami.

Taiwan authorities said the quake, which struck at 3:23 pm on Monday, was 17.5 km below the surface.

The epicenter was recorded 55.6 miles off the east coast of Taiwan, about halfway between the coast of Hualien Prefecture and Yonaguni Island in southern Japan, the country’s meteorological bureau said.

The quake was felt across Taiwan, the office added, with buildings shaking briefly in the capital, Taipei.

Japanese authorities said a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern and westernmost island of Yonaguni, about 66 miles east of Taiwan.

While the US Geological Survey said it recorded a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in the area.

The initial seismicity measurements often differ immediately after the event and can be revised after further analysis.

There were no immediate reports of damage following the quake.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said there may be a slight swell of water in the aftermath of the quake, but there is no danger of a tsunami.

More than 100 people were killed in the 2016 southern Taiwan earthquake, while a 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
