Central Point SD Supervisor: We used to have shooting drills and earthquakes, now there are school shooters

Southern Oregon,—Local teachers, reflecting on the tragedy of another school shooting, attempt to plan a path forward. The death toll in Tuesday’s mass shooting in Ovaldi, Texas, reached 21. 19 children and two teachers.

In the aftermath, as they deal with burdened hearts, school leaders Wednesday focus on their safety protocols, and how we can prevent this from happening here. It’s only been a day since the mass school shooting devastated the small, tight-knit Texas community.

But for local school districts, who have dealt with the prospect of these kinds of threats, Tuesday was a very real thing. In the wake of another fatal shooting at an American school, Southern Oregon school officials are once again dealing with the unthinkable.

“Although an incident like this has cleared up so far in Texas, the nation as a whole is uniting and really hitting home because we all have children in our schools in our local communities,” said Central Point Principal Walt Davenport.

Whether it’s Columbine, Sandy Hook or Parkland, horrific mass shootings are increasingly common in America, something not lost on Central Point, Walt Davenport.

“It has been the shift for me in my teaching career from earthquake drills and fire drills to this other threat of school shootings, school violence, and bomb threats becoming more and more averse to saying this routine,” Davenport said.

Schools have now beefed up security, with alarms, cameras, emergency response buttons and safety training. School resource officers also have an increasingly important presence on campus.

“We go through and practice what we would do at an event like this, the police department does, SRO does, we do drills and crisis planning with the staff we talk to before the event, during the event and after the reunion piece,” said School Resources Officer, Mike Jackson.

On Wednesday, the Central Point School District increased its presence to enforce law around schools to ease parental anxiety. District therapists and psychologists have also been told to be on the alert for students or staff who may need support. But Davenport says there was no directive from his administration to stir up Tuesday’s tragedy in the classroom.

“As much as it gets asked in the classroom, we encourage teachers to use these resources when students have questions,” Davenport said.

The Medford School District sent an email to staff and families Tuesday night. He stated in part, “Events like this are not only tragic and distressing, but can often lead to anxiety and fear felt by our entire school community.”

“Our top priority has always been the safety of students and staff, and at the end of the day it is all about human care for one another,” said MSD Director Brett Champion.

As the community mourns the loss, all of our local schools are asking for your help moving forward. The goal is to ensure the safety of our children.

“The bottom line is, if you see something, say something, the students and their families are where we can contribute more, be vigilant, and know what’s going on,” said Ron Hafnier, director of facilities and leadership at MSD.

Schools also tell me throughout the year that they participate in what’s called Alice training to prepare for these situations. It stands for Alert, Close, Notify, Counter and Evacuate.
