Disabled veterans now allowed free access to all national parks

The Senate passed legislation that allows veterans with service-related disabilities with free access for life to all 419 national parks in the United States.

The Wounded Veterans Recreation Act by Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jane Shaheen (D-NH) was passed by the Senate. It now needs the approval of the House of Representatives before it can enter into force. The new bill will amend existing eligibility criteria and allow millions of veterans free access to national wild parks and attractions.

Senator Collins said: “The brave men and women who served in our army and were wounded in defense of our nation must have free access to our national parks and recreational areas – the American land they fought to protect.”

Senator John Tester (D-MT), a senior member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, who for years pushed the agenda for free access to National Veterans National Parks, was happy with the news.

He said: “This bill makes our most beautiful and beautiful places in Montana and throughout the country freely available to disabled veterans in our country.”

Under the current law enacted in 2004, veterans deemed 100 percent disabled by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, are granted free national parks and a free federal recreational land corridor.

About 25 percent of the 4.7 million countries of veterans have a service-related disability, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of 2019, at least 2.7 million of these veterans had a disability rating of at least 60 percent.

Supporters of the legislation, as well as healers, state that veterans with PTSD benefits greatly benefit from spending time in nature.

“Recreation in our national parks and in public lands can be a valuable healing tool for veterans suffering from physical and emotional wounds as a result of their service,” Senator Tester said. “I will continue to fight to ensure that our legislation crosses the finish line in Congress.”

Representative Raul Ruiz (from California), who introduced the bill in the House of Representatives in November, also pushed hard for passage. Ruiz was a doctor in the California emergency room before he was elected to Congress in 2012. In 2010, the 82nd Airborne Division awarded him the Commander of the Public Service Award for his work as medical director of the Haitian Relief Organization / P after the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

“National parks can connect our veterans with nature and increase their spiritual, mental, and physical well-being,” Ruiz said last fall.

Ruiz was heavily involved in obtaining appropriate medical care for those stationed at the K2 military base in Uzbekistan as well as digging burns during the first days (2001-2005) of the war in Afghanistan.
