Magnitude 5.2 earthquake hits Tringlak, tsunami not seen

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern coast of Tringlak, East Java, Sunday morning, had no possibility of triggering a tsunami, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

“Modeling results show that this earthquake is not likely to cause a tsunami,” said Bambang Setyo Praetno, head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG.

The epicenter was located at the coordinates of 8.60°S latitude and 111.41°E longitude, 23 km south of Munjungan, Tringalek, and at a depth of 103 km below sea level.

Prayetno explained that the medium-level earthquake was caused by the deformation of the Indo-Australian plate that slid into the island of Java in the Beniuv region.

“The results of the analysis show that the earthquake had a skew motion,” he said.

The earthquake was reported to be felt by residents in East Java and parts of Yogyakarta and Central Java, particularly Kowloon Progo, Bantul, Wonogiri, Gunungkidol, Pasitan, Chilacap, Karangkats, Ponorogo, Nganjok, Blitar, Tringalek, Klaten and Karanganyar in II-III MMI (Modified Mercalli Tremor Intensity), which means that it was felt in real home or as if a truck had passed.

While in Lumajang, Madiun and Kepanjen, the earthquake was felt in II MMI, or some people felt it and suspended light objects.

“The results of the BMKG monitoring did not show any aftershock activities,” Prayetno added.

He also urged the public to remain calm and to stay away from buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake.

In addition, before going into their homes, people living in the affected areas were asked to check and make sure that the apartment buildings are earthquake shockproof, or are safe from damage by earthquake vibrations that may jeopardize the stability of the building.
