Strange tides in West Cork not caused by sea quake, experts say – Irish Times

Experts say the unusual tidal conditions left some locals in West Cork frightened when they saw water levels drop dramatically over the weekend due to fast-moving weather fronts rather than an earthquake at sea.

Dozens of people watched in Union Hall and Courtmacsherry Harbor last Saturday, as a rapid drop in water levels stranded boats and caused locals to worry that a tsunami could head towards them.

However, weather and marine experts believe that the event, felt as far afield as France, Cornwall and Wales, was caused by a tsunami, a phenomenon in which high waves are caused by fast-moving weather rather than an earthquake at sea.

Investigations are ongoing, Professor Frederic Dias, Principal Investigator at MaREI, the Science Ireland Research and Foundation Center for Energy, Climate, Research and Innovation at University College Cork.

“What’s interesting is that it’s not a local phenomenon, it’s more global. I actually felt it in France too. It appears to have been due to atmospheric turbulence, with effects that can be amplified locally,” Professor Dias told The Irish Times.

Dr Gerard McCarthy, an oceanographer in the Irish Climate Research and Analysis Unit (Icarus) in the University of Maynooth’s Department of Geography, said he believes the most likely cause of the phenomenon may have been meteorites rather than an earthquake or landslide.

He said: “A small earthquake has been recorded near the Azores, but it is likely too small and too distant to have an impact on the Irish coast to any extent like we saw at Union Hall and Courtmacsherry.”

Dr. McCarthy said Union Hole and Courtmaccherry harbors are regularly affected by sewage, which is a regular fluctuation of tidal currents due to atmospheric pressure.

“Seiching is basically the movement of water back and forth and this happens in both bays naturally. My best guess is that this regular oscillation coincided with a drastic and abrupt change in atmospheric pressure somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Cork.”

“If you imagine someone dropping a large amount of water directly onto the sea, that’s the kind of effect we’re talking about. This pressure combined with the regularities in the water in those bays can have an effect as exciting and unusual as the one we’ve seen.”

Such events occur regularly around the Irish coast, he said, but are more common during the winter. “It’s something that can happen anywhere but if you get the right mix of factors together, you can see something very exciting happen like what happened along the West Cork coast over the weekend.”

A witness at Courtmacsherry, charter boat operator David Edwards, said: “The water was flowing like a river. I’ve never seen anything like this before. The first thing you think of is a ‘tsunami’.”

At Union Hall, Adrian Nowotynski was mooring on his boat when this phenomenon occurred.

“It was going so fast that my boat was sloshing at the bottom and so were a number of yachts and fishing boats and I had never seen that before. My first instinct was that there must be an earthquake somewhere, like no one had ever seen in Union Hall before. “, He said.
