Toronto FC’s comeback was unsuccessful as the Earthquakes scored late to force a draw

Jack Scahan scored his first Major League Soccer goal in stoppage time to lift the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC on Saturday.

Goals from Dender Kerr and Jonathan Osorio seemed to have given Toronto the win, even as a late goal came seconds after Toronto goalkeeper Quentin Westberg saved Jeremy Ibobisi.

But Ivunanishi Achara’s attempt to clear returned the ball to the penalty area in Toronto and Skahan beat Westberg in the 92nd minute.

Ebobisse scored his 10th goal of the season to put Earthquakes ahead in the 26th minute, and San Jose looks set for their first away win of the season as the game continues.

But after a fruitless opening 45 minutes, Toronto came out with a bigger goal in the second half and finally beat Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski in the 71st minute with a quick counter-attack.

Osorio sent the ball forward to Kerr, and as the defense waned, the 19-year-old curled a curling ball from outside the penalty area right past Marcinkowski into the corner for the third time this season.

Montreal made an early lead but Sporting Kansas City bounced back to claim a 2-1 win in Major League Soccer at Saputo Stadium on Saturday night.

Rommel Koyoto scored for Montreal (9-8-2), but goals by Roger Espinosa and Remy Walter gave Sporting Kansas City (5-11-4) the three points.

After their remarkable 2-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders on June 29, Montreal found itself suffering back-to-back losses.

Having lost their last two league games, the bottom two remained confident of overcoming their losing woes in Quebec. Both clubs have not played each other since March 2019, but Kansas City have lost only once to Montreal in their past seven encounters.

Montreal opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Lassi Lapalainen dribbled past Ben Sweet on the right before heading towards the far post in favor of Kyoto. Honduras headed his seventh goal in the campaign.

Espinosa took advantage of the Montreal accident and tied with Kansas City in the 29th minute.

Coyoto’s cross was rebounded by Espinosa and the Kansas City midfielder Honduras beat the ball. Espinosa then hit the ball over Sebastian Briza, who ventured too far from his net.

Kansas City scored the second goal in the 63rd minute. Khairy Shelton freed himself from the right after a throw-in and returned to the middle of the penalty area. Walter strengthened the Montreal defense and beat the match winner.

Sporting KC scored a surprise win over CF Montreal, with Remy Walter’s second-half goal scoring a 2-1 win for Sporting KC over Montreal on Saturday night.

Montreal played without Victor Wanyama, who missed the match with a non-COVID illness. The club also announced before kick-off that it had added goalkeeper Logan Ketterer to the COVID-19 protocol.

Montreal is now looking forward to next week as it hosts rivals Toronto FC on July 16. Kansas City will continue its three-game road trip and meet Minnesota United on July 13.
