Show ‘9-1-1’ on Athena, Maddie and Chimney’s COVID pregnancy issues
(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the season 4 premiere, “9-1-1.”)
“9-1-1” left fans hanging on Monday as the fourth season premiere, “The New Abnormal,” ended, with Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) stranded inside a house that had fallen off a cliff by a small earthquake caused by the breaking of the Hollywood Reservoir Dam. . Yes, as show director Tim Meiner told TheWrap, it’s “not a great place” for the lead lady in a Fox drama — especially on her first day back at work after being assaulted by a champ last season.
And while she’s left to wonder what happens to Athena until next week’s episode, Miner tells us that while she’ll survive this emergency, Athena has a tough road ahead this season, and like her husband Bobby (Peter Krause), she correctly believed she wasn’t fully healed yet.
“This will go on all season,” said the 9-1-1 contestant. “Even though Athena is protesting that she is fine, she is fine, she is fine — perhaps not as well as you think. And she has kind of been forced back into actual field service, I think even before she says she is ready.”

Meanwhile, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) will be dealing with the stress of pregnancy amid this season’s pandemic, which has prevented Chimney from coming home to be with Maddie for the past few months, out of fear that it might not be safe for her and her baby – amid Other concerns.
“I think there’s more to it than just — I’m not saying it’s a proper excuse for him,” Minear said. “And it’s not that he doesn’t want to be with her and it doesn’t mean he’s having any kind of commitment issues. I think Chimney is scared. If you go back to his experience with Kevin, who went with him to the academy and who ended up dying on the field, I think Chimney is just afraid that he If he gets too close to that thing, he’ll break it. I think that’s really what works with Chimney. But it won’t be long before he has to contend with that and sort of form. Not long at all.”
And if you’re wondering if the pandemic has also affected Chimney and Maddie’s relationship planning — as it does in engagements and weddings — then, yes, of course it has.

“Just like all of us, they have to sort of rethink the things they would normally do in this situation,” Minear said. “So it’s not like I do, like, big giant COVID stories, but I admit it and put it in the water and the world of both shows because our characters have gone through what our audience has gone through. It just means that, unlike us, they have to think about it when they make a move. So It’s like Maddie is not going to get a traditional baby shower where it’s a room full of people. She’s not going to be able to do that. So there’s kind of sad to that and there’s kind of sad to do that in this situation. And that’s something they have to overcome. They have to find Other ways. These stories are ambitious – it’s not about how a pandemic prevents people from living, but how they decide to go on living and not let them put them to hibernation.”
Part of the “9-1-1” journey will focus on introducing Maddy’s parents and Buck (Oliver Stark) in the next episode, a story that will affect Buck in a serious way.
“We’re going to meet her parents while she’s still pregnant,” Minear said. “And what they’re going to bring into town is a family secret that will force Buck to look at himself in a way he’s never done before. It’s a secret that Buck doesn’t know.”

For now, things are good for Buck, who has a kind of virtual relationship going on, and “you’ll find out who he’s talking to in no time — and they might not be the person you think they are,” Meniere told us.
Monday’s premiere revealed that things are going well for Athena’s daughter, Mai (Corin Macia), but not by Athena’s standards, as the field sergeant isn’t happy with her daughter’s decision to take a gap year and work with Maddy as a 9-1-1 operator.
“I think Athena’s objection is just, ‘Why would you choose something that is likely to be a career path? “I was going to college,” Miner explained. “Like, Athena had a dream that Mae would go to college and maybe have what some would consider even bigger dreams for her daughter. But her daughter does this for a reason, and that reason will become very clear by the end of the next episode.”

For tonight’s big disaster, the Hollywood Dam collapse, Meniere explained the very specific reason behind the choice, which you can see in full below.
The dam collapse was like, there’s kind of a metaphor that we’re all feeling when we’re writing these episodes, which is, everybody’s kind of locked in their home. It kind of appears as Janelle’s character, which is the woman on the bike. You see her at the beginning of the episode, she’s the one who calls 9-1-1, meets her and sees the months that have gone by where she lost her husband to COVID. We all felt like the world was ending, but there was so much pressure that people felt like they were about to explode. In fact, they exploded. There was civil unrest. There was pressure building up nationwide, all over the world, really. So around the summer, the “dam” had broken. So for us, it’s just a metaphor for how we’ve been feeling about the lockdown and the pandemic and the state of the world in general. And then we all felt that at some point, we would all be able to open the door and go back into the world in a way that hasn’t happened yet. But the idea was, you go back into the world and feel like you can finally breathe, and then all hell breaks loose, because it’s “9-1-1” and that’s what’s going to happen. So the moment you let your guard down, a dam will collapse, a house will fall off a cliff, a bus will come from your office window. I’ve been saying this a lot, but since March the world itself has been driven more by my shows, so how do my shows make enough noise that you can hear because of what’s really going on? Normally it would be like the world was crazy, but I flush my kid down the toilet or Santa Monica hits a tsunami, and she says, “Okay, that sounds ridiculous.” But suddenly it’s like, “Let’s watch that ‘9-1-1’ soothing, because it’s so much simpler because of what’s going on outside my window.”
“9-1-1” airs Mondays at 8/7c on Fox.
