Sounders vs. Earthquakes, Conclusion: Up to the End

The Seattle Sounders hosted the San Jose Earthquakes on MLS decision day with nothing at stake except for the Heritage Cup, some casual vibes and maybe a job or two. At the oddly appropriate end of a season in which it looked like the Sounders couldn’t buy a tie for most of the season, that season ended 2-2. Seattle took the lead twice, and the earthquakes tied twice.

Nico Lodeiro gave Seattle a very early lead, knocking the ball into the net 27 seconds into the game, and offered some hope that this game might be different from many of the Sounders’ frustrating games this season. Unfortunately, this hope did not last long. The earthquakes equalized in the fourth minute when Christian Espinosa fired a shot at Stefan Cleveland from the corner of the penalty area. Cleveland had two fists on the shot to clear it, but Barrett ran off Nuhu’s arm and managed to get to Jeremy Ibobisi single-handedly in the penalty area. Easily finished in a virtually empty grid.

The two teams continued to create chances until the end of the first half, but Nico Lodeiro managed to score again at the beginning of the second half. This time Lodeiro hit the net trying to clear a corner kick, a goal worth the entry price. It looked like Seattle might have come out with a consolation victory, but Earthquakes alternate Cady Coyle had other intentions. Cowell took Alex Roldan for a short run as he stormed off the left of Seattle and ran along the top of the box before firing around Stefan Cleveland’s dive and into the far side for a two-goal mark on each side. This is how things ended in a difficult but meaningless season finale in the end. The Earthquakes won the Heritage Cup for only the second time in seven years, a small consolation for ending the season in the West.

The Sounders, and at least many of them, will be getting a good deal of rest ahead of what will surely be a busy 2023 year, while a few will head to Qatar to join their national teams at the men’s World Cup.

28′ – Montero hit a shot that Earthquakes goalkeeper GT Marcinkowski took out his body in front of the defender before eliminating the danger.

32′ – Josh Atensio drives towards the finish line and sends in a straight cross that finds Christian Roldan on the far side of the goal, but Roldan’s shot goes wide.

49′ – Ludeiro again! Rusnak’s corner kick goes wide of the goal, as Lodeiro hit it from the top of the penalty area to defeat Marcinkowski and regain the lead! 2-1

75′ – Coyle nearly offsets the earthquake, cuts off the left side and defeats Cleveland with a shot into the far side net. 2-2

Well what do we have here? There were two players in this squad that appear to have been selected with a focus on the 2023 roster layout: Stefan Cleveland in goal and Josh Atencio in midfield. This was Atencio’s sixth straight start, with Atencio’s previous five starts coming alongside Dani Leiva. Realistically, that’s not the position we’re likely to see Atencio in in the future, so it’s important to see how he plays alongside Albert Rusnák. Cleveland, who kicked off the start of Stefan Fry’s injury, is probably in the shop window.

Just one day: Nico Lodeiro’s seven goals and 11 assists in the league for 2022 isn’t far from the kind of production we’d expect from an exorcist midfielder, but it’s not for nothing that before this match he only scored once from open play and four of those assists It was secondary. Lodeiro has shown his class and quality in flashes this season – particularly during the CCL series where he scored five goals and made 2 and only had 3 games without a goal or assist as he played every game – but we didn’t really get to keep him running at his best in MLS. Today, though, was different. Clearly frustrated with the way the season turned out, Lodeiro made sure to remind us all exactly what he can do. Both goals were great, the kind we haven’t seen much this year. Who knows how long we will be with Nico Lodeiro, but we will always be today.

(Off) Season of Change: It will be some time before we can see the Seattle Sounders again. In some ways, it’s a bit of a blessing: this has been a tough season, containing the highest brilliance in the club’s history, as well as some miserable dips. Garth Lagerwey has indicated that the club will need to take a closer look at the reason for the meltdown that caused the Sounders to miss the MLS playoffs for the first time after becoming the first club ever to lift the CCL Cup. It seems clear that the organization erred so much in the aspect of continuity and solidity in the roster to start the season that they sought this trophy, and it worked, but it had very clear consequences. The two highest-paid players on the team, Raul Ruídias and Lodeiro, are both in their 30s and have lost significant periods of time through injury. There were a lot of other players who dropped out of shape or failed to live up to expectations. Could this winter see a makeover that results in a new and improved Seattle Sounders? Only time will prove it.
