An earthquake hit central Maryland shortly before, nearly 24 hours after another earthquake hit the south near Richmond, Virginia. The 2.0-magnitude event occurred outside of Sykesville, Maryland, in Carroll County at 11:49 p.m. The seismic event, which was at a depth of 5 km, was felt by more than 125 people who used the “Did you feel it?” The USGS earthquake site took over.

Earthquakes rarely occur in Maryland, but the magnitude increases over time. According to the USGS and Maryland Emergency Management Agency, between 1758 and 1987 Maryland experienced 22 minor earthquakes. However, from January 1990 through December 1996, Maryland experienced 35 small tremors – 1 in Harford County, 2 in Cecil County, 3 in Baltimore County, and 29 in Howard County. In just seven years, the number of known earthquakes in Maryland has doubled.

The last significant event was on July 16, 2010, when a 3.6-magnitude earthquake occurred near Germantown. Earth shaking was felt as far away as Annapolis and Northern Virginia.

According to the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, based on available data, the overall earthquake risk for all jurisdictions, except for Cecil County, is low to medium low, compared to Maryland. Cecil County is rated as Medium driven primarily by poor population, density, and geographic extent. Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George, Charles, Calvert, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Wicomico, and Baltimore counties are classified as medium-low based on population density and population fragility.

According to the USGS, tonight’s quake was the first to hit Maryland in more than a year. The most recent was a 1.7-magnitude weak event that occurred near Woodlawn.

Maryland has felt several earthquakes in neighboring states, but Marylanders are more likely to feel one of these outside the state than one inside Maryland. Southwest Virginia, Central Virginia, and the Atlantic coast north of Wilmington, Delaware have much more seismic activity than Maryland does. An out-of-state earthquake occurred that was felt by much of Maryland on Easter Sunday, April 22, 1984. In fact, it has been reported to be felt in eight states and the District of Columbia, over an area of approximately 19,000 square miles. This earthquake was centered about 12 miles south of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and was measured as a magnitude 4.1 seismic event. According to the Maryland Geological Survey, the most prominent impacts in Maryland were in the northeastern part of the state. The Lancaster earthquake was likely related to the Triassic structures in the area.
