A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck Tonga just before midnight local time, 211 kilometers from the capital, Nuku’alofa.

People in Tonga were initially evacuated to higher ground, but so far there have been no reports of damage.

The Tonga government said the tsunami warning issued earlier for the entire kingdom has now been rescinded.

However, there are concerns about four fishermen who were at sea at the time the tsunami warning was issued.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 24.8 km, 211 km from the capital, Nuku Alofa, east-southeast of Niavo.

An RNZ Pacific reporter in Nuku’alofa said the quake lasted about two minutes.

In January, the eruption of the Hongja Tonga-Hunga Hapai volcano triggered a tsunami that devastated villages and resorts and cut communications in the South Pacific nation of about 105,000 people. At least three people were killed.

For Samoa, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning following a 6.5-magnitude earthquake earlier in the Fiji Islands region.

“The depth is 38 kilometers and the distance is 560.34 kilometers southwest of the capital, Apia,” she added.

“The public is hereby advised that although there is no tsunami from this earthquake, please take extra precautions when attending activities near the coastal area,” she said.
