A violent earthquake struck part of the main island of Indonesia on Saturday, sparking panic and sending people onto the streets.

There were no immediate reports of casualties in Java and officials said there was no danger of a tsunami.

The strong earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 5.7 by the USGS. It was centered about 18 kilometers (11 miles) southeast of Banjar, a city located between the provinces of West Java and Central Java, at a depth of 112 kilometers (70 miles).

This comes nearly two weeks after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake killed at least 331 people and injured nearly 600 in the city of Cianjur, West Java.

The November 21 earthquake was the deadliest in Indonesia since the 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi that killed about 4,340 people.

Authorities confirmed in an Instagram post that some 377 people were injured in the November earthquake, adding that more than 7,000 people have been displaced.

There is no danger of a tsunami, but warned of possible aftershocks, said Dwikorita Karnawati, head of Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

The agency initially estimated magnitude at 6.4 and later lowered it to 5.7. Variations in early measurements are common.

Tall buildings in the capital, Jakarta, swayed for more than 10 seconds and some were ordered to evacuate, sending people onto the streets. Even the two-storey houses shook in the Central Java cities of Kowloon Progo, Bantul, Kebumen and Shilacap.

Earthquakes occur frequently throughout the sprawling archipelago, but it is not uncommon to feel them in Jakarta.

The country of more than 270 million people is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis due to its location on the arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific basin known as the “Ring of Fire”.

In 2004, a very strong earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, mostly in the Indonesian province of Aceh.

Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
