Seismic swarm under Kīlauea caldera attributed to recompression after eruption: Maui Now

A swarm of small earthquakes under the Kīlauea caldera has been attributed to recompression after the end of the last eruption.

The USGS’ Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that there were approximately 25 earthquakes less than 2 on the Richter scale that occurred between 6 and 9 p.m. HST on Friday, December 30, 2022.

HVO scientists said that although the swarm appears to be dwindling, activity could still be picked up again.

The agency described the swarm as “typical” and generally sparse under and around the south side of Halemaʻumau.

Alert levels for both Kīlauea and Maunaloa were downgraded from Watch to Advisory earlier this month on December 13, 2022.

“Overall, the Kīlauea summit has been gradually swelling since November 28,” according to a media release from HVO. “There is no indication that a resumption of volcanic activity is imminent and there are no signs of significant activity at any of the Kīlauea rift zones or on Mauna Loa.
