GoFundMe helps Solana Beach residents support family and friends in Turkey after the earthquake

An online fundraiser has raised about $14,000 as of the first week of March for a Solana Beach family from Turkey who wants to help family members and others who have been devastated after the recent earthquakes.

According to the GoFundMe page, the Uz family was “catastrophically devastated by the loss of life in their family due to the earthquakes in Turkey.”

“They’re raising money to help pay for essential items like clothes, socks, shoes, blankets, etc,” says the GoFundMe page.

Sinem Oz, who has lived in Solana Beach with her family since 2009, said she is “very grateful” for the support her family has received from the community. The online fundraiser started with a relatively modest goal of $2,000 before nearly 200 donors pushed the total into five figures.

“It’s very difficult to reconstruct, all the memories and all the historical stuff,” said Oz, who works as a crossing guard at Skyline Elementary School and in the Solana Vista School cafeteria.

More than 50,000 people died as a result of the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria last month, according to government and media reports. The Associated Press reported that more than $34 billion in damage was caused.

Oz said many family members and friends were among the victims. She said her husband, Orhan, and their two children plan to visit Turkey at the end of the school year, taking as many supplies as possible.
